WASP & HORNET PREVENTION TIPS

Summer is a favourite season for so many… including many insects and bugs. Many of these are not annoying or bothersome, but pests like wasps & hornets can become a serious concern and spoil our fun in the heat and sun.

Wasps & hornets are pests whose populations grow all summer, reaching peak numbers by late summer. Come middle to end of August, active nests on homes, garages, sheds, kids play structures, cottages, businesses, etc., are buzzing with overwhelming numbers of stinging and possibly aggressive wasps & hornets.

Our team of licensed pest control professionals have shared 3 expert tips to help prevent wasp & hornet issues during the summer and fall.

3 Tips to Prevent Wasps & Hornets in The Summer & Fall

  1. All through the summer, check the structures on your property for active nests - visible and non-visible
  2. If you find any nests, get them removed or treated as soon as possible, even if they are not bothering you at the moment. If not dealt with early enough, the wasp & hornet colonies living inside those nests will keep growing and have the potential to become a very serious issue in late summer and also in the fall.
  3. When the weather cools in the fall season and it’s time to overwinter, dozens of fertilized queen wasps & hornets will leave their exposed nest in search of a new warm place to rest through the winter season. With your home, cottage or business being right there, they could find their way inside through gaps, caps, crevices and holes.
    • If you leave a non-visible nest on your house, cottage, or business untreated, come fall, fertilized queens (possibly dozens of them) will not leave their nest and fly away. Instead, they will crawl deeper inside and overwinter in wall voids and could end up indoors come spring when they try to find their way back outside.
    • If you think or know you have a non-visible wasp & hornet nest on the exterior of your home, cottage, or business, don't seal the area up to block the entry/exit point. This will trap them and not get rid of them. With their exit point blocked, wasps & hornets will move further inside the structure seeking a way out and you could end up with 100's of wasps & hornets inside your home, business, or cottage.
