In Canada, the German Cockroach, Pennsylvania Wood Roach (also called Cedar Bug, Pine Bug & Wood Roach) and the  Oriental Cockroach are the most common types of cockroaches. Worldwide, there are more than 4,000 cockroach species. They are the most adaptable and resilient known pest in the world, with the ability to live without food or water for week. .

Cockroaches,for the most part, are scavengers and will eat anything. They are unsanitary as they crawl through sewers and garbage. They are also nocturnal and scatter when exposed to light. Cockroaches prefer to live in humid and warm environments, where food is ample. In homes and businesses they often dwell in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and basements.  The Pennsylvania Wood Roach is an outdoor cockroach common in Ontarios' Cottage County. It is not unsanitary like other species and cannot survive indoors.

On average an adult cockroach ranges in size from 1 to 5 cm in length, with an oval, flattened body, 6 legs and a pair of long antennae. They can be black to reddish brown in colouring. Cockroaches reproduce quickly and are challenging to eliminate.

Preventing cockroaches from in invading your home or business, and making your home or business less inhabitable are the best ways to help you get rid of cockroaches. This means sealing cracks around doors or windows, using weatherstripping, repairing leaks and maintaining ongoing sanitation. If you do have a cockroach infestation, seek professional help.
